Geotechnical Instrumentation Lead

This is a Contract position in Fort Mcmurray, AB posted May 23, 2023.

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Geotechnical Operations Support team, the Shift Team Lead (STL) – Instrumentation Monitoring ensures that instrumentation data is collected from mine earth structures at Albian Sands in a safe, compliant, and effective manner.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Direct supervision and training of the instrumentation monitoring team
  • Ensure that all team members receive safe work practice training and that they follow safe work practices
  • Maintain alignment with Geotechnical Engineering, Mine Planning, and Mine Operations stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with instrumentation monitoring schedule and adjust staffing requirements to meet needs of stakeholders
  • Assess competencies and conduct performance
  • Ensure that instrument stations, equipment, and hardware are maintained, repaired, or replaced in a timely manner
  • Manage deployment of new automated instrumentation and equipment according to schedule
  • Maintain awareness of new instrumentation technology and relevant products
  • Train staff to diagnose, maintain, troubleshoot, assemble, and repair automated and non-automated instrumentation
  • Support  budget forecasting and track spending
  • Promote a proactive, front-line driven safety culture as a core value, through communication and continuous improvement

Other Details:

  • Job location: Fort McMurray, Alberta – Albian Oil Sands Site
  • Shift schedule: 7×7, 12 hours a day (schedule may change as per discretion of Management)
  • Company sponsored Fly-in/Fly-out program with charter flights from Calgary or Edmonton, or need to relocate to Fort McMurray to take advantage of Company Sponsored bussing
  • Eligible for relocation pursuant to Canadian Natural’s Relocation Regular Policy
  • This is a safety sensitive position 

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Possess a valid class 5 Drivers’ License with limited to no demerits
  • Proficient in off-road driving and pass a defensive driving course
  • Able to carry 50 lbs 100 m over rough terrain on a regular basis
  • Complete a pre-placement medical assessment of fitness for duty including a drug and alcohol screening test
  • Highly motivated with strong leadership and verbal communication skills
  • Technical diploma in a field related to mining (Civil Technologist, Geological Technologist, Geomatics Technologist, or a Mining Technologist)
  • 3-5 years of experience in geotechnical instrumentation and automation
  • Experience with mentoring and leading a team, including being able to confidently provide feedback and encourage development in team members
  • Able to receive accreditation with ASET as a C.E.T. or C.Tech.
