Process Engineer

Canadian Natural Resources Limited

This is a Contract position in Fort Mcmurray, AB posted January 18, 2023.

The Opportunity:

The Process Innovation (PI) team at Horizon supports implementation and integration of accepted new technologies into plant operation. That starts with identifying performance gaps or operational risks and proposing solutions. PI works closely with other teams such as Engineering and Operations to ensure the issues are scoped properly and the proposed solutions fit the business need. The Process Innovation Engineer will participate in the Technology Development process, at times as a contributor, at other times as a project lead. Depending on the state of the technology, this process may involve bench scale experiments, engineering studies or field pilots. The ultimate goal is to carry the solution through to commercial deployment.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Work closely with customers to identify gaps and risks, and propose viable solutions that consider past development activities from a theoretical and operational perspectives
  • Create a Technology Development Plan to carry the technology through to commercial application
  • Actively participate in field execution of approved projects per the plan, within budget and scheduling constraints,
  • Contribute technically to the engineering and design phase of any site modifications for testing purposes including but not limited to pilot construction and plant tie-ins
  • Prepare progress reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Complete technical evaluation of alternative trial schemes, conduct analysis of information generated as a result of active test work and properly document results, conclusions and recommendations

  • Job location: Fort McMurray, Alberta – Horizon Oil Sands site
  • Shift schedule: 4×3, Monday to Thursday, 10Hr days
  • Eligible for relocation pursuant to Canadian Natural's Relocation Regular Policy
  • Company sponsored Fly-In/Fly-Out from Calgary or Edmonton

Skills & Qualifications:

  • PhD, MSc or BSc degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mineral Processing, Civil or Mechanical)
  • Professional Engineer designation with APEGA
  • 5+ years of engineering experience in Oil Sands or a related industry 
  • Sound scientific background with proven track record in systematic problem solving.  Prior experience in technology assessment and implementation is an asset.
