Paralegal/Law Clerk Contract


This is a Contract position in Fort Mcmurray, AB posted July 12, 2021.

What is the opportunity?

As Paralegal/Law Clerk , you will s upport the goals of the Vice President & Associate General Counsel, Banking & Enterprise Services, and Senior Counsel, Canadian Banking Operations and Estates, in achieving the business/operations, strategic priorities and operational performance goals of the Law Group, in particular the performance commitments of solution oriented advice and responsiveness.

You will also provide support and guidance to various stakeholders including the Banking Operations and Estates Team (Canadian Banking) and provide advice and guidance in the areas of operations, estate administration and registered plans, powers of attorney, incapacity, trusts (personal and commercial), guardianship and financial abuse in both common and civil law jurisdictions.

Please note this is 18 month contract position What will you do?

To deliver sound legal advice to the business and various stakeholders across Canadian Banking and Functional Groups with a view to mitigating legal and reputational risks to the Bank.

To identify, assess and mitigate legal, reputational and regulatory risk relating to escalations, inquiries and exception requests, in the areas of banking operations and business disputes, estate administration and registered plans, powers of attorney, incapacity, trusts (personal and commercial), guardianship and financial abuse.

To collaborate with lawyers and policy owners to update the Bank’s internal policies and procedures.

To use Law Group’s tools and precedents to manage the high volume of inquiries and increase efficiency and consistency in managing escalations and inquiries.

To foster an environment of collaboration with team members and achieve professional excellence and a superior client experience.

To ensure that responses to client complaints are provided to the business in a timely manner and in accordance with upcoming regulatory requirements.

To work closely and collaborate with other team members and seek guidance from lawyers when making recommendations involving legal issues, including supporting Client Care in responding to second level client escalations.

To participate in initiatives to increase efficiencies in responding to inquiries and escalations.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have Law clerk or paralegal certification from accredited Canadian organization or equivalent legal education or banking experience.

Ability to manage multiple competing priorities, make independent decisions, exercise sound judgment and work under tight deadlines in a fast paced environment.

Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with key stakeholders and teams that are diverse and multi-disciplinary.

Self-starter with strong client focus and the ability to take ownership of key projects and work independently in an environment with tight deadlines and multiple priorities.

Excellent drafting and communication skills.

Nice-to-have Proficient in both French and English and familiarity with the Civil Code of Quebec.

The ability to prioritize matters effectively and work in a fast paced environment.

Strong organizational, analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and time constraints.
